FRTs are controversial because they can enable very rapid firing rhythms while technically remaining semi-automatic by design intent. Regulators, courts, and lawmakers have debated whether certain FRTs meet the legal definition of a “machinegun” or are lawful accessories — leading to seizures, litigation, and settlements. That controversy means availability and legality can shift quickly.
